Anandam Old Age Home

Anandam was established by Mrs. Bhagirathi Ramamurthy. Moved by the plight of the elderly who struggled to receive pensions and benefits due to them, Bhagirathi took to wondering how much harder it must be for elderly people who had no financial means or family to care for them.

On 15-02-2002, Anandam was established as a home exclusively for elderly people with no family, and no income. 8 elderly men 12 women live in this home, and are offered food, shelter and other basic needs free of cost. With the help of Sundaram Medical Foundation, all necessary medical assistance is provided to the residents.

Senior citizens who have children and / or financial means, but who seek to live here are sent to other, more suitable old age homes.

The senior community at Anandam has achieved some remarkable things. For example, a large Rangoli pattern created by them has been listed in the Guinness book of records.

Sanitation, Medical and eye camps are regularly conducted at this home. A new residential facility is now being built at the estimated cost of Rs. 1.25 crore. For the past 12 years, a blood donation camp organized by the Indian Bank also happens here.

The residents are productively engaged in producing cleaning agents, incense sticks etc for in-house use, and thus help the home in being self-sufficient where ever possible.

When tipped off about elderly destitutes in the area, the home organizes for a visit of the location where the person was seen, investigates the background, family and financial status of the person in question, and organizes to have them moved to the home if they are found to fit Anandam's care criteria.

Land for this facility was provided free of cost by Mrs. Jayanthi Ravindran, who also sits on the committee of this organization.
