Akshaya

Akshaya is an organization that has taken on the task of feeding the hundreds of abandoned mentally impaired individuals who have taken to begging and living on the streets of Madurai.

This movement was started in 2002 with a feeding program for 30 individuals by Mr. Krishnan, a gold-medalist graduate of Catering and Hotel Management Studies, who was unable to bear the sight of mentally impaired individuals resorting to begging.
Akshaya's operational details are astonishing. At an expense of Rs. 3000 a day, Akshaya works 16 hours a day, producing 270 food packets, and covering a daily circuit of 110 kms. Akshaya has also helped move several destitute people to care homes run by Mother Theresa's Sisters of Charity.

Despite various shelters and care homes, destitution and homelessness is a rampant problem in urban India. Groups like Akshaya come as welcome relief to such unfortunate individuals, who are assured at least of a few square meals thanks to group like these.
