Leprosy Rehabilitation Program (by the Ramakrishna Math)

The Leprosy Rehabilitation Program was established by the Ramakrishna Math in 1989, and is running successfully ever since.

The program not only offers medical care to its patients, but also addresses their emotional concerns and helps bring out talents and abilities hidden within them. Overall, the program helps them reintegrate fully into society.

The program also offers patients and their families’ vocational training in cottage industry crafts, and helps them find a way for economic self-sustenance.

Every Sunday, for two hours between 3 PM and 5PM, service personnel visit the center to offer psychological counseling to the patients.

In order to save the families of leprosy patients from neglect, children of patients are given educational aid. Regular eye care and necessary eye surgery is arranged for some patients at the Sankar Nethralaya Eye Hospital in Chennai.

Patients who have lost limbs get help in receiving pension benefits.

IN 2006, 12 leprosy patients were assisted with housing under the Tamilnadu Housing Scheme. The program regularly organizes exhibitions of handicrafts, greeting cards and paintings made by Leprosy patients.

The program also works with the Chennai Sanatorium and organizes recreational events to regale the patients living there.

Providing all-round physical, emotional and spiritual care for patients afflicted by a highly stigmatized disease, The Leprosy Rehabilitation Program run by Mr. Shiva is offering extraordinary service to patients in the state.
