Sri Jain Goshala

The cow has long been revered as a sacred symbol of maternal generosity in the Hindu tradition. With the view of keeping this belief alive, Sri Jain Goshala is an establishment in Vellore that is committed to the rescue and care of aged and maimed cows that have been marked for the slaughterhouse.

Care for such abandoned cows includes medical attention, nutritious fodder and safe, sanitary shelters. The rescued cattle are segregated into maimed or injured animals, milk producing cows and buffalo, and are housed in separate shelters.

Some of the milk that is collected from the cows is boiled and supplied to the nearby school for the blind. They also supply curds (yogurt) produced at the shelter to a home for the elderly.

Every morning, a wholesome porridge is prepared and served to those afflicted with leprosy.

The organization actively promotes humane treatment of animals, and awards prizes to children for putting such principles into practice.

The Goshala was started 22 years ago by Rukji Kanhaiyalal with 27 animals housed in 2 acres of land that belonged to Kanhaiyalal's mother. Now, the Goshala is a thriving shelter for over 450 cows, and is being run by the founder's son, Mr. Rajesh Kumar.
