Ashoka Trust for Village Self-Government

Ashoka trust of Kuthambakkam village is bringing to life the Gandhian idea of an India powered by entirely self-sufficient and self-reliant village economies – a “Grama Rajya”.

The following are the trust's achievements in Kuthambakkam:

•    Realizing social equality
•    Natural methods of agriculture and food production
•    Renovated irrigation methods
•    Adopting earth bricks for construction (non-fired, compressed bricks)
•    Self-employment assistance for rural youth
•    Encouraging cottage industry
•    Training Panchayat leaders from other villages in various governance programs
•    Full utilization of the fertility and water availability of agricultural areas
•    Bringing products manufactured by local self-employment groups to markets within the same region, thus creating self-sufficiency
•    Creating long-term strategies for water conservation, rainwater harvesting etc.
•    Preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of villages

Ashoka trust was founded by Mr. Ilango, who started as Kuthambakkam's Panchayat head, but has risen far above the duties of his post through his visionary initiatives. To better govern his village, Ilango started to visit several small rural societies in developed countries, in order to study their governance practices and learn from them. Through the various measures he has spearheaded, Mr. Ilango has not only reduced the dependence of village societies on government intervention and aid, but also has helped bridge the gap between the government and the public.
