Siragugal

Siragugal is a community improvement program in the village of Kooram, Tamil Nadu that is working to reverse the state of neglect that plagues the various public facilities in their village.

Siragugal has brought the dilapidated school building back into a welcoming space for children, and has arranged for a schoolteacher at the group's personal expense. For those who are unable to fit into the school's schedule, a night school has been set up. Importantly, Siragugal has also motivated drop-outs to come back to schools. Every year, Siragugal drives the school's annual day celebration, marked by competitions and sporting events.

One of the success stories of this group is a lady student who, benefitting from the positive impact that Siragugal has had on education in the village, is now training to be a teacher.

Siragugal has also undertaken the cleaning up and beautifying of neglected public places that were filling up with garbage. The road leading into the village is now lined with 70 trees, thanks to the group's effort. Siragugal has also helped bus stops get a sheltered waiting area with bus timings and emergency phone numbers on display.

Pictures of India's social leaders and inspirational quotes are on display in several public locations to motivate and inspire the public into a sense of togetherness.

Siragugal also organizes blood donation camps, and maintains a list of regular donors, now adding up to 80 youngsters.

A pioneering initiative lead by Mr. Anbu, Siragugal is an example to rural communities everywhere about how commitment and small, simple steps can help a village turn completely around from neglect to progress.
