Arunodayam

Arunodayam is a home for the mentally retarded that was founded and is run by Mr. Ayyappan. Ayappan grew up with a mentally retarded younger brother, and has witnessed firsthand the social ill-treatment and abuse that such individuals often face.

Deeply affected by his brother's suffering, Ayyappan resolved to create a safe, secure asylum for children with such impairments and offer them nutritious food, healthy living conditions, recreation, therapy, trainings, and loving, respectful care.

In 2003, at the Villivakkam railway station in Chennai, Ayyappan chanced upon a mentally challenged young boy about 5 years of age, who seemed abandoned. Arunodayam was started with this boy, and now has 41 children in its care.

In order to offer the best possible care for children at Arunodayam, Mr. Ayyappan underwent a 2 year course in the complete care and rehabilitation of those born with challenges.

Arunodayam has the following plan for its future:

•    Counseling and guidance of parents in the care of their special needs children
•    Establishing a vocational training center for mentally impaired individuals
•    Daycare center for special needs children
•    Creating a medical trust with volunteer doctors trained in neurology and psychology
•    Creating a help line for special needs individuals
•    With the help of social workers, setting up a system of home visits to meet the medical needs of special needs individuals

With plans such as these, Arunodayam is not only a well-grounded care center for the mentally retarded, but also a visionary organization that seeks to revolutionize how those with special needs are cared for in this country.
