Avvai Ashram

Established on Gandhian principles by Dr. J. S. Soundiram, Avvai Ashram of Sivasailam runs establishments that care for homeless and physically disabled children and young women. 13 boys and 37 girls are currently under the care of the Ashram. Priya, a former resident student at the Ashram, now teaches in the college run by them.

Apart from academics, the students are trained in various performing and visual arts and crafts. Monthly medical check-ups are organized through a dedicated doctor. The Ashram runs two establishments for the care of children – Soundiram Mahila Mandal Children's Home at Sambankulam, and Kasturi Children's Home at the premises of the Ashram itself.

Children in the Ashram's care range from the age of 6 months to 5 years. In order to cater to the educational needs of children from age four to ten, a special foundation called Annai Dr. J.S. Soundiram Centenary Memorial Children's Welfare Center has been started with the help of Srinivasan Trust and Gandhigram Trust.

At The Ashram's residential high school for hearing impaired children, 74 male and 34 female students are enrolled at various levels ranging from class I to Class X. Every year, with the help of the district's head  of the physically challenged citizens' welfare committee, free hearing aid devices and solar batteries are distributed.

Under the supervision of the Gandhigram Trust, twelve women's self-help groups are successfully run with 194 members. These groups help women establish small businesses like grocery stores, production units for homemade spices and other food products, mat making, raising livestock, dairy and poultry farms.

Avvai Ashram and other establishments affiliated with it are guided and directed by Dr. Kausalya Devi, Mr. V.C. Rajagopalan, and Mr. Sivakumar.
