The
Rain Centre by Akash Ganga Trust is an effort to spread awareness about rainwater
harvesting and conservation among households, residential complexes and
commercial buildings. The group's contention is that, in a country where there
is chronic shortage of drinking water, conserving rainwater is vital to our
sustained growth.
The
group was established in 2002 with the financial assistance provided by an NRI,
Mr. Ramakrishnan, and runs with the help of friends, journalists and social
activists.
The
Rain Centre is located on the premises of the Akash Ganga Trust, and is
available as a permanent exhibition for students, social organizations and the
general public to learn about rainwater conservation.
So
far, the group has helped over 800 buildings acquire rainwater storage tanks
and wells. The group offers free consultation, and also undertakes installation
of rainwater conservation systems at the clients' site for a nominal fee.
The
group has also made a short informational documentary about the importance of
rainwater harvesting.
Currently,
the Rain Centre has adopted a new cause – spreading awareness about the
potential for turning human waste into useful manure. As a pilot project, the
group has adopted a fishing village near Kovalam, Kerala, and is helping them
acquire sanitation toilets.
This
pioneering initiative is headed by Mr. Shekar Raghavan.
